Mukhtar Begum was the first big name as actress and singer in the 1930s in Indo-Pak film history. She started in the 1920s as stage actress and dancer who was a professional classical singer as well. She also composed music for films like Prem ki Aag (1936) and Bhesham (1937).
Mukhtar Begum encouraged Baby Noorjahan to continue her efforts in singing and acting world when she began her career as child star in Calcautta in 1935. She trained her younger sister The Queen of Ghazal Farida Khanum and top singer Naseem Begum. She was also guardian of famous film star Rani, who was daughter of one of her servant. She was married to the legendary Urdu drama writer Agha Hashar Kashmiri. She was born at Amritsar and died at Lahore on February 25, 1982.
